Softness can be powerful.

They said she was very sensitive and beautiful—everyone in her time knew it. Let's walk together with Berthe Morisot.

Berthe Morisot was born in 1841 in Bourges, into a cultured family. From a young age she studied painting alongside her sister and soon entered the artistic circles of Paris. She met Édouard Manet, who influenced her work and became a close figure in her life. She later married his brother, Eugène.

In a world dominated by men, Morisot became a key figure of Impressionism. She took part in the first Impressionist exhibition in 1874, alongside Monet, Renoir, and Degas. Unlike her male colleagues, she couldn't freely wander the cafés and public spaces where many Impressionist scenes were born, so she turned that limitation into strength — making her own home, family, and intimacy the center of her artistic world. Her style is defined by light, almost vibrant brushstrokes and a deep sensitivity to light and movement.

Her works portray intimate scenes: women, children, gardens, and everyday moments. Yet beneath that apparent delicacy lies real modernity. She painted emotions, fleeting instants, and the light of daily life, often leaving parts of the canvas nearly unfinished, as if trying to capture a mere breath of reality before it vanished.

In works like The Cradle, she conveys deep tenderness and an intimate gaze. Her painting explores femininity and the poetry of everyday life, breaking with traditional norms. She was also a determined professional woman: she exhibited regularly, corresponded with the great artists of her time, and claimed her place in a movement many considered exclusively male territory.

Today she is recognized as a fundamental artist and a pioneer for women in art, whose intimate gaze still moves those who contemplate her canvases more than a century later.
