Caravaggio, Master of Light and Shadow

Passionate about art and writing, I invite you to discover some of the greatest painters and sculptors in history. Today, let’s explore Caravaggio, one of the most powerful and provocative figures of Baroque art.

Arriving in Rome around 1592, Caravaggio captivated patrons with his revolutionary approach to realism. He portrayed saints and biblical figures with raw humanity, often inspired by ordinary people. His dramatic use of light and shadow (chiaroscuro) became his signature style.

Among his most famous works are The Calling of Saint Matthew, The Martyrdom of Saint Matthew, Judith Beheading Holofernes, and The Entombment. Viewers are drawn into the intensity of the scenes, the realism of expressions, and the tension between darkness and light.

He died in 1610 under mysterious circumstances at the age of 38. Despite his short life, his influence on art history is immense. From Rembrandt to Georges de La Tour, many artists were inspired by his dramatic and emotional style.

Today, Caravaggio continues to fascinate through his intensity, modernity, and powerful vision of humanity.
