A $6 Million Banana: Has Art Become an Idea?

November 2024, New York. At Sotheby’s, a banana fixed to the wall with a piece of duct tape sells for $6.2 million. The work is called Comedian, by Maurizio Cattelan. A few days later, its buyer, entrepreneur Justin Sun, eats it in front of the cameras.

The public laughs, protests, shares. But let us ask a simple question: what exactly did he buy? Not the fruit, which can be replaced at any supermarket. Not the mark of a hand, since there is none. He acquired a certificate of authenticity and the right to say: “this idea belongs to me.”

Yet nothing here is new. In 1917, Marcel Duchamp exhibited a urinal signed “R. Mutt” and shook twentieth-century art. Since then, the idea has outranked the object. The banana is its direct heir, with one difference: the market seizes it and turns it into a global phenomenon.

As a painter, I feel this paradox. I spend hours before a canvas, searching for a shadow, a gaze, a silence. And the world looks at a banana. Should we despair? I don’t think so. This banana is a comic mirror: it shows what we value, rarity, story, virality, sometimes more than beauty itself.

But today’s trend also reveals something else: a longing to return to gesture, to matter, to the handmade work, as if to balance so many concepts and screens. Perhaps that is the real mystery: the more art dematerializes, the more we thirst for presence.

So, banana or brush? Perhaps both, as long as they make us think.

And you, what would you buy: an idea or a painting?
